V/A - Left Without Much Fuss LP
A record for punks who collect records. Ultimately a tribute to punk rock, this record was compiled to mark forty years since I first discovered the music in 1985, and fifty years since it all really began with the first Ramones album in 1976. Thirteen classic punk/hardcore/garage songs covered by old friends and Ugly Pop groups, all from the Toronto/Hamilton area. Including a huge booklet and additional insert packed full of punk obsessive stuff, it's a pretty ridiculous labour of love made for anyone who loves punk rock, punk culture, punk history, and punk records.
Features Golden Shitters, Cult Crime, Drift Current, Street Code, Early Tombs, Thee Rogue Telstars, Ichi Bons, David Quinton & Back to Basics, The Vapids, and Last Drag. (UGLY POP UP082)
CALAMITY - Calamity LP
Rock'n'roll from Hamilton, Ontario has a certain feel that sets it apart, something that reflects the city's unpretentious industrial roots. Think Teenage Head, whose music, for all its fire and energy, betrayed a soul and craftmanship a million years from the posing and deliberate amateurism of their '70s punk contemporaries. Fast forward to 22026, and that spirit permeates the debut album from Calamity: while the quality of playing and composition recalls classic hard rock a la primo AC/DC and Thin Lizzy, the roughness and energy of delivery is pure and undiluted, giving this a feel remarkably similar to modern Australian groups like Civic, Split System, and Judges. And yeah, it's that good. (AND LAGER001)
ZERO BARS - Zero Bars 12"
Zero Bars have been playing around Toronto for a couple years now, refining their attack into the potent set documented on a pair of demo tapes. The sound is raw, tough, and impassioned, drawing on early American hardcore and unafraid of genre-blurring post-punk curveballs, recalling the likes of Really Red or the Proletariat. This is punk rock with brains alongside the brawn, its smart, critical lyrics very much of our age.
'Zero Bars' is the group's first vinyl, collecting both demos and a new track on a high-quality 12" pressing, cut hot and pressed on 45. On Hamilton's new AND Records imprint in conjunction with Ugly Pop. (LAGER 002/UP083)
EYE BALL - Gull Songs 12"
What came first, the gull or the eggpunk? Originally released on cassette, 'Gull Songs' serves to introduce the wider world to a group that have recently turned a lot of local heads. Featuring twelve cuts of razor-sharp, hyperactively melodic punk blitz, it's packed full of frantic melodies, big hooks, and lyrical wit at high volume. Distinct and endlessly listenable, this is a fine debut. On Hamilton's new AND Records imprint in conjunction with Ugly Pop.
